Description
This is a photo my husband and I took on St. Patrick's day in Manhattan. My husband used to be in the fighting 69th and would always March in the parade with his brothers. I digitally modified it to capture the mood. It was snowing but green was peeking through. Famous flat iron building is in the back.

Very nice....a little Byrnes history.......my great grandfather Hugh Byrnes was a stone mason during the construction of NY City's first skyscraper. It's my favorite building in the city.......also Hugh's father, William Byrne from Kildare, Ireland, fought with the Fighting 69th during the Civil War and was wounded at Gettysburg.......thanks to your husband for his service..... Interesting story...but what does fighting 69th mean ??
Carrie Joy Byrnes replied:
Good question, Michel. I posted it on my fb page and let my husband answer. "The Fighting 69th" was the name given by Robert E Lee to the Union Army's all Irish, New York Militia unit the 69th Infantry during the Civil War. The unit went on to fight in WWI (Jimmy Cagney and Pat O'rien starred in the movie) and is the single most decorated unit in US Army history . It's Heraldry and History continue in New York's Army Ntaional Guard's 1/69 In Battalion, HQ'ed in NYC.
